Yogurt Making in a Caravan. 07/21/2010
I am keen to buy an EASIYO Yogurt maker. All I will need is the Yogurt maker, 1 litre of long life milk and a sachet of the yogurt making mix and I will be able to make 1 litre (1 Kg) of live culture yogurt at a time, easily in the caravan. My friend Nikki showed me hers and I tasted the yogurt she made, it was beautiful. She makes a low fat version the same as I would, very healthy. I used to make yogurt years ago. I would save 100mls of live culture yogurt, mix it with milk then add it to an electric yogurt maker, the results were very inconsistent and not a good flavour, I gave up making it. This system looked to be easy. Some more, Healthy Living Links:- Sampling the Local Produce at Malanda Dairy Centre, Atherton Tablelands, North Queensland. 07/03/2010
![]() At Malanda Dairy Centre, you can sample delicious local produce when dining in the restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch. The dairy is located in the friendly township of Malanda. The drive from our base camp at Flying Fish Point, took us through beautiful scienery of rolling green hills, world-heritage listed rainforests and past numerous waterfalls. I was reading sensa reviews and I found it interesting that you can eat high fat cheese and still lose weight? The French appear to do it. The secret for the French is portion control and more exercise. They eat less and exercise, which is something that the average Australian and American citizen does not do and this is why we think of the occasional eating of higher fat food, as being 'bad'. No food is actually, fattening, it is when you eat and how much you eat that counts as regards our day's energy balance. What we eat, ultimately affects our health, but it is energy balance that affects our weight. The secret of weight control is in portion size. Those French who do worry about their weight can always go and see a nutritionist, courtesy of the French health service. It would be great if our Australian government had such a great program going to help Australians understand the concept that weight management is simple mathmatics of getting the energy in and the energy out, balance right and physical health is affected by what we eat and how we move. Nutritionist Dr Francoise L'Hermite says the French secret to staying slim is to - make sure you sit down with friends or family for a meal, eat three times a day at regular intervals, don't snack, don't eat in front of the television, and finally - eat slowly and savour both the food and the company. ![]() With delicious local foods like this mixed platter to share between Reg and I, from the Malanda Dairy Centre for lunch and a light evening meal of Reg's Blue Spinner Crab and a green salad with lemon and white wine vinigar, and lots of bushwalking in between, it was a perfectly enjoyable day and our energy balance for weight management, remained on target. I enjoy using our tours as a means to keep fit, the walk around Malanda then to the Malanda waterfall, was a great day's exercise. This touring lifestyle and sampling of local produce life, is great 'Bon Appetite' and is keeping both Reg and I in fairly good shape for our senior years. It has been a fantastic first week for preparing to spend winter here at Flying Fish Point, Caravan Park. Who would have thought that I would have bought my husband Reg a fishing line on Tuesday not knowing if he would use it and he has already caught six fish :-). Nothing like fresh cooked, whiting and salad, for a healthy, breakfast, lunch or tea. Healthy meals are going to be a easy, we will be eating white fish regularly at this rate as Reg is loving the experience of fishing..Sunday tomorrow will also be the day, I have committed to getting out of bed before dawn and to be outside, exercising at dawn. :-) Not too hard as I will be in tropical Queensland watching, the sun rise over a beautiful ocean and my man fishes for our breakfast. What joy. Meanwhile back in Victoria, winter is setting in and one of our daughters, has the job of organizing our car and caravan registration, renewals, fire insurance quotes and all those bills we could not set up as auto deduct from our accounts. Thanks Leanne J, you are a gem. SKI Club Members 04/15/2010
There is a bit of a funny story to Reg and I purchasing a George Forman grill and roaster oven a few years ago, for our caravan kitchen. We told both our daughters that we were going shopping with the intention of buying one or the other. We were advised by one daughters, that we could just use non stick foil and cook on our existing frypan and save out money. OK, well meant advice, but we wanted to buy one or the other, not seek a low cost alternative. Our second daughter, equally caring in her nature, advised us to go to the Warehouse and purchase a no name product to do a similar job as the more common grill. At that stage, the oven was a new concept and there were no low cost versions we liked. Somehow, Reg and I felt a little rebellious, at being in our 60's and often being advised by thirty something’s as to how to manage our money so after a quick check of the fo one daughter spoke of and the warehouse the other mentioned we headed to the department store and joined the SKI Club. We became official members of the Spending the Kids Inheritance Club and in buying both, went over our budget and we have never regretted ether purchase, nor the fun we had, laughing at our 'rebellion at being told how to spend our money, by our own 'kids'. :-). . Tonight’s chicken dinner was a free range, organic local chicken, and it was divine, cooked without any salt or seasoning, just onions and potatoes cooked in the pot with it and all the fat drains out into the dish beneath the roaster, making it low fat cooking. Delicious! :-). PS. We LOVE our children :-) and understand they meant only to have given us good advice, :-). Australia is facing a health challenge on a scale not seen before. Lifestyle related health conditions are responsible for up to one third of all health problems in this country1. Poor nutrition along with physical inactivity are risk factors for chronic diseases including heart, stroke and blood vessel disease, diabetes, cancer and kidney disease. Thousands of Australians die prematurely each year, while thousands more live with significant disability, losing years of healthy, active life. Chronic disease is not just an, inevitable, consequence of ageing, but can be caused by poor nutrition. Many people could live longer and without illness if they improved their diet and increased their activity1. Take away food at markets and shows. 11/26/2009
I have witnessed a lot of good and bad examples of take away food stalls through my years of exhibiting arts and crafts and as a travel writer and at my recent reviewing of Liesurfest, Reg and I ordered hamburgers from the 1st Strathsaye Scouts Group and I felt they showed the best of take away food service. They had a covered marquee with three enclosed walls with the food being cooked well back away from the customer and the money handling area and out of direct sunshine. The only food exposed to the air was the food actually being cooked or served and those handling the money did not touch the food itself. Our take away food was presented to us on a plate with several paper towels per person and clean tables and chairs available for us to eat at, under full shade. No cooked food was being stored until it was purchased. The food represented value for money, the beef in the hamburger was high quality, not fatty and there was a generous serving of coleslaw under the burger, a reasonably healthy choice for take away. There was an option of sauce. I usually find eating at community profit, food stalls for example the CWA, Scouts, Church groups will give a reasonable quality, safe food handling, burger, better than the chips, Pluto pups, jam donuts available from many food vans, though I think these mostly appeal to the teenagers, not the grey nomad who wants value for their money. Things to watch out for to avoid a bout of gastro after the show or fair, is that any food that is not cooked in front of you, is kept at temperatures below 5oC or above 60oC up until serving time. Food stalls must provide protection of the food from contamination from flies, dust, dirt, direct sun, human breath or smoke. Food stalls must consist of a roof and three sides enclosed. All stalls to be situated on a readily cleanable surface eg: concrete, brick paving, duckboards, tarpaulins or heavy duty plastic. And the floor covering to extend beneath servery tables. The worst ever example of food handling I have seen was a chicken van who cooked the chicken at the back of the van it served from, out in the open and the stench of the thawed defrosted chicken prior to it’s being cooked was overwhelming. These days I even sniff around the back of a stall before I buy from the front and I only order chicken or fish if I feel I know and trust the food stall operators to be as food safety conscious, as I am myself. I got a nasty bout of food poisoning from a dish of garlic prawns bought at the Royal Melbourne Show. I buy a chicken and mushroom dish from an Asian food stall I know, you can watch it being cooked, he puts the chicken frozen solid into the wok, cooks it in front of you, if I am there early when it is first being prepared, there is no possibility of contamination.. If in doubt, look for the obvious safe food handling techniques and do not buy food being cooked by the same person handling the money or stored outside of a bain-marie, once cooked. If you are at a show in Western Australia, I can recommend, Western Australian lamb, ‘The Lamb Van’ for a great just like home cooked, lamb shank. J Yum! As for drinks, it is almost a fashion accessory these days to carry your own, bottle of water as you walk around a show and to have back up water containers to refill from, in your car. Healthy, Tasty, Trail Mix Ingredients, choose from your own favorites. My suggestions are:- DRIED FRUIT (1 cup chopped) CEREAL (1 cup) NUTS & SEEDS (1/2 cup) OPTIONAL (1/2 cup) dried cooked soybeans or Popcorn Directions Mix well and store in serving size: 1/4 cup press seal bags. |
